Truly a classic!! My brother, cousin and I used to ROFL watching those kids rock out to Schroeder's tunes on the piano!!! I know EVERY dance- Do you? Now even my 7 year old even joins in!

It's not Christmas until my mother hears Linus respond to Charlie Brown's plea:

The Sound of Music

"The hills are alive....."

I absolutely LOVE watching the Sound of Music which traditionally airs the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. The music, the songs, great plot and story line...Just LOVE it!

Watch this classic and sing all the songs with the children.

New addition to our 2011 guide..."It's a Wonderful Life" The timeless classic starring Jimmy Stewart helps us to reassess what's truly important in life. You can usually catch it on Christmas Eve.

Sinner Man, Fix Me Jesus, I Wanna Be Ready, Wadin' in the Water.....I LOVE every movement of this signature classic of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

Without a doubt my most favorite activity of the season! So excited to be taking my 7 year old ballerina for the first time this year.

At least one tear (who am I kidding, MANY) will find its way down my cheek as I watch mesmerized by the strength, beauty, fire, power, joy and grace of this American classic set to the Negro spirituals. Revelations touches my soul every time!

THE FINAL STRETCH: The Private School Application Process

I know that we're not alone as we prepare for the final stages of the admission process for independent schools for the 2012-13 academic year. The recruitment events, open houses and informational sessions have ended. The applications have been/are being submitted. Parent interviews are being conducted. Student visits scheduled and entrance exams are being administered. It can be a daunting and demanding process but it's one of the journeys many parents take on their quest for academic excellence for their children.

With the admissions deadlines quickly approaching, I reached out to our friend, Gina Parker Collins, Founder of RIISE- Resources in Independent School Education to get some last minute words of wisdom for parents in the final stretch.

Indeed, we are approaching the holiday season wrought with festivities, pageantry, gift wrapping, and gift giving. It is a race to the finish struggling to be mindful of the value of family and the time we spend together.

Some families have a competing race at this time of year, the private school application process. Some have crossed the finish line and completed the process, while others are still looking and hoping for opportunities to find the right school that's still looking for great candidates.

Here are a few things to keep top of mind:

* If you've completed the process then take a breather and enjoy the holidays. But, if you have not sent a thank you note send one, then take a breather!

*The interview. What should you expect? What does the admissions team want to know? What are they looking for? Remember you are in the driver's seat too, so ask thoughtful questions. The Admission team wants to like you. They also want to know that your family will contribute your time, talents or both. As for your child, let them know they have the stage, the spotlight, the chance to share what they know and love.

*Search out current families in your close and distant circles for insight on the culture of the school community to make sure that what you love about school really exists.

*Make sure your first choice school knows they are number one. Beware! Be honest about your first choice. There can only be one!

*Work on a Plan B. It is very important to have a strategy for attending the best possible school if your child doesn't get accepted to any of your choices. There are good charters and public schools out there but you have to do the research. Let’s Talk Schools http://letstalkschools.com/ is a great online community to check out.

*Be prepared financially. Financial aid or not, tuition is a fiscal responsibility, for a long time. Think of it, K-12...you do the math. If you have applied for support pray you get what you need (you’ll know when you get acceptance letter). If you don't, please don’t give up, I have seen success in the appeal process.

*Lastly, if you are not accepting the offer of placement please notify the school immediately with a thank you note so they can offer the space and financial support to another family.

Perhaps you are a family just starting to consider private independent schools, it is never too early to start looking. Ask around and visit school websites. Begin to think about your values and personalities as a family and match them up with schools mission. Think about what your families return on investment should, or can be. The spring is a great time to begin to make appointments to casually tour campuses. Organizations like Prep for Prep http://prepforprep.org/, Oliver Scholars http://www.theoliverprogram.org/ , and Reach http://reachprep.org/ are great prep programs for the older kids, and Early Steps http://www.earlysteps.org/ for the younger. Who Runs the World....GIRLS!

The girls of JG3 at Mount Tom Day Camp danced to Beyonce's "Run the World (Girls)" in yesterday's talent show, so the song has been pumping through my iPad the last few days. I've even learned a few of the steps so Brooke and I both get a kick out of dancing together! Luckily my 7yr old doesn't understand what "who runs this mutha" means so we're all good....but I digress.

Anyway....it made me think back to Jada Pinkett Smith's book Girls Hold Up This World. As a new first time mom to a little girl, I remember tearing up on first sight of the cover displayed in the front window of the bookstore as I strolled by. The picture of Jada and a young Willow (we should've known then that she'd be whipping her hair less than a decade later) pierced straight through my heart. I rushed in and immediately purchased it and it quickly became apart of our bedtime routine. A photo book depicting girls across the world in all ages and stages coupled with an empowerimg message throughout makes it one of those books that should be in the library of every mom with a girl.

Do You Know What Today Is?

It's our anniversary......Tony Toni Tone

On June 15, 1996 in the church that I attended since I was 5 years old, there was a loud gong of the church bell and the procession began to my new life with my husband, Spencer. In that moment to clear the jitters, my dad quietly whispered, "if you cry, I'll punch you in the face". Laughter emerged and the festivities commenced.

"This day I marry my friend, the one I live for laugh with dream with love." What a day it was! My aces: Karen, Elise Tina , Seana and Esi stood by my side and my sorority sister Natalie blessed us with the most beautiful praise dance that symbolized our commitment. Then the party began! Let me paint one of my most memorable moments from the reception...after the band finished it's set, the dj, my high school friend Clemont, spins our favorite songs on the wheels of steel, including my new husband's single "Tried by 12". All of a sudden you hear the hypnotizing beat of "The Big Payback" accompanied by Total, "Can't you see what you mean to me our love was meant to be you were made for me..."Spencer and I dance across the room to the middle of the floor and rock out in a way that would make Diddy proud.

15 years and 2 children later what a journey it has been. I've learned and grown so much over the years...While we enjoyed the day, designing a life together has been where the rubber meets the road.

So what are the secrets of our success? Glad you asked....

Our faith...1 year after we walked down the aisle, I walked down to the platform at Christian Life Center and submitted my life to Christ. While I grew up in the Catholic Church, my spirit was drawn that day and my life was changed. So much wisdom I've gained through my pastor A.R. Bernard and his lovely wife Karen. Married over 30 years, they have generously shared the truth of what marriage is all about. The joys and it's sorrows, its triumphs and obstacles. To paraphrase, marriage is the one relationship where we are vulnerable because we grow right in front of someone else. Ain't that the truth! When we needed wise counsel, Minister Onorio was there to guide us back to each other when we seemed so far away.

Our support network...Surround yourself by positive people who support marriage. Our family and close friends have truly stood by our side through the years. It's so good to have a counselor in the family! My sister Karen and my brother-in-law married 18 years have shared some timeless truths and helped me sort through things when they felt overwhelming.

Watch your tongue. Speak only in truth and love. Use your words to build up, not tear down. You can't take back what you say so use your words wisely. After 15 years, communication is one of our biggest challenges but our commitment to working at will only make it better.

After God, keep your marriage first- don't let parenting or the busyness of life take you away from your first love. Schedule regular date nights to make sure you stay connected.

It's been a wonderful journey and I'm looking forward to our silver 25th anniversary when our children will be old enough to celebrate us:) Black love truly reigns supreme! Believe it!

The Semi-Happy Marriage

As we get ready to celebrate 15 years of marriage next month, I found this interview (see link below) with Pamela Haag, author of Marriage Confidential, quite intriguing and had to stop everything to share it with you. I love it when I receive leads from our Chocolate Chip family so keep them coming! Thanks Cyril for sharing!

Raising children, balancing career and family and managing all our other responsibilities and interests are a huge challenge. With the troubling economic environment and the pressure to keep it all together, it's easy to focus less on our marital relationship while managing the other storms and challenges in our lives. Even in those season we have to come back to ensure we don't take advantage of our spouses and become complacent in our marriages. We all deserve more than that.

Pamela Haag is quite courageous to write on such a private and sensitive subject which really challenges all of us to raise the bar and give our best in our marriages. I applaud her for her efforts. I just pre-ordered it on ibooks and look forward to checking it out.

Choolate Chip Pee Wee Golf

Our pee wee golfers were out in full swing this afternoon! This special parent/child class introduces 4-6 year olds to golf while preparing mom and dad to coach their kids in the fundamentals of the sport.

Putting was the focus this week. Check out our son Ryan (of course in the Rondo jersey) and his BFF as they learn the proper way to hold the putter. Everyone will get to put their skills to work next week during the mini golf challenge!

Students get first-hand lesson on Japan devastation

Are we raising emotionally intelligent kids? The recent crisis in Japan is a current event that provides an opportunity to discuss empathy and the calamaties that others face.

Our kids pray for the Japanese every night and my daugther has decided to host another lemonade stand (the other was for Haitians after the earthquake) to raise money for the cause. I also encouraged her to ask her teacher to coordinate a group philanthropic activity for her class.

The Way of Love

Golf Anyone?

My how time flies when you're having fun! Looking at this picture, I can't believe that 3 years have elapsed so quickly! Our Uncle Jimmy, an avid golfer, first put a golf club in our daughters hands at the age of four during a family bbq. It became apparent very quickly that she had a natural swing and great form even at that ripe young age. Inspired by what he saw, her grand uncle quickly blessed her with her very own Barbie golf clubs:)

For a few weeks we hoofed it from Westchester to Newark and then quickly decided to find a program closer to home. When a pee-wee division (ages 4-6) wasn't available nearby we formed our own 4 week session on Saturday afternoons for our littlest golfers.

Now that she's seven we've signed up her up for the junior program which cost only $15 for 6 1 hour sessions! You can't beat that! Classes begin mid-April so check out the site to find the location nearest you.

Our little guy is 4 now and he's ready to tee up. Chocolate Chip will be organizing another 4 week pee-wee class for 10 4-6 year olds on Saturdays at 2:30pm at Mosholu in the Bronx. Space is limited to 10 children and will be filled on a first come first serve basis. The Independent School admission process has a reputation for being daunting and is not for the faint at heart. Many of our families began the process by attending our Fall Boutique Recruitment Event. After school visits, student and family interviews and other opportunities to get to know the schools, they toughed it out and made it through and lived to tell about the experience.

Well the acceptances letters are in and it's time to celebrate! Join us over the coming days as we shout out our Chocolate Chip Kids!

Congratulations to Rachel (one of my son's BFF's) who has been admitted and will be attending Riverdale Country Day School in the Fall!!

I'm especially proud of her because I've watched her grow over the years into sweet, well-mannered, self-disciplined and wise young lady. She is truly the "mother hen" of her class! Kudos to her wonderful parents and The Milestone School- where good beginnings never end.

Yeah for Ian (one of my daughters long time friends)!! He's on his way to the Hackley School this fall!! Ian is a product of The Milestone School and Harlem Succeess Academy.

We have a special connection to Ian and his family because we're blessed to be apart of the same spiritual family. Special shout out to Christian Cultural Center!

Brown History for Kids...The Harlem Renaissance

In the world of my 4 year old son, Black people are brown and White people are peach. If you follow me on Twitter, you may have read that he told me he wanted to celebrate Brown history, not Black History because his skin is brown. Teaching our history clearly starts at an early age.

You may recall from my facebook post that I am the chair of Black History month at my daughter's public school. After it being a non-event last year, I volunteered myself to ensure that a meaningful celebration of our culture took place.

For Black History Month, students are often given bits and pieces of information without context. One day learning about Dr. King, the next Harriet Tubman and the next Jackie Robinson with no understanding of how they relate or the historical timeline or social conditions that existed at the time that they lived. To counteract that, I wanted to take a more integrated approach enabling children to learn in a more wholistic fashion making a greater impact.

So as I began to make my plans, my first step was to choose a theme: The Harlem Renaissance

Taking a comprehensive approach gave me the platform to present the history, geography, philosophy and artistic elements that emerged in addition to the key figures of the era.

In a school that is 50% African American and 50% White, it was also important to me to celebrate the brilliance, creativity and success of Black people. I remember being horrified when my preschooler came home and blurted out, "Martin Luther King was shot". Not that he was factually incorrect, but what a harsh way for a 3 year old to learn about one of our greatest leaders. Clearly his legacy can be broken down in some other manner that children can grasp at that young age. The message that Black folks were college educated, created art forms like Jazz, were wealthy and accomplished and not only slaves was critical to expanding the knowledge of these elementary school children.

So what are we doing? I'm glad you asked:)

Each week takes an element of the Harlem Renaissance (history/geography, arts, key figures) and breaks it into small chunks of information. We share the information daily during morning announcements and send a summary home in a weekly newsletter so families can share in the learning and reinforce the information.

Students get to test what they have learned in the Black History Challenge. Each perfect score gains the student a ticket into raffle with phenomenal prizes such as a Family Membership to the Studio Museum in Harlem http://www.studiomuseum.org/ and a gift certificate to the renowned Hue-Man Bookstore & Cafe in Harlem http://huemanbookstore.com/.

Our grand finale is our school wide assembly featuring Victoria Bond and T.R Simon, authors of the acclaimed book Zora and Me http://zoraandme.com/ and award winning illustrator Bryan Collier http://bryancollier.com/ (Uptown, Visiting Langston and Doo-Wop Pop). The students themselves will also take center stage taking us back to the Savoy with the Jitterbug, reciting Langston's poems, discussing the art of Romare Bearden and singing Lift Evry Voice to name a few.

It is my hope that after all is said and done, we will have made a positive impact, expanded the students' body of knowledge an left an indelible imprint of the souls of Black folk.

It's Not Too Late To Set Family Goals for 2011

2010 is history! Have you chartered your course as a family for 2011? I'm not talking about resolutions that will last a week before you break them, but a plan of action for the entire family.

Here's one of our goals:

As parents of 4 and 6 year olds, we recognize the important role of cultural enrichment to expand upon what they learn in school. To that end we will visit a museum/cultural center each month. We actually started early by attending the Medieval treasure hunt at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at the Cloisters yesterday and a quick visit today to the American Museum of Natural History. We had to pull the kids away from the galaxy exhibits where Brooke learned about supernovas. Ryan lit up when he saw "Rexy" the dinosaur from Night at the Museum. I can't wait to watch how they grow and develop as a result of these monthly excursions.

See not so bad...

In addition to our personal goals, each child has their own goals too:

Read a chapter book a month

Make up bed/keep room clean daily

Learn to ride bike without training wheels

Eat vegetables...

You may recall from Chocolate Chip's Guide to the Holidays that we have a family tradition of seeing a performance of The Nutcracker annually during the Christmas season. This year is extra special for us because our daughter is performing in Purchase College Conservatory of Dance production of The Nutcracker which premieres this week!

When my daughter was concerned that a classmate would tease her about wearing afro puffs, we armed her with an empowering response "I love my pom poms and they look good on me". Kadence Empowerment for Kids

Every time your child turns on the television to watch their favorite show, a new impression gets fixed on their brain. These impressions manifest in the area of speech, attitude, manners and even sleep patterns. The average 8-18 year old watches 4.29 hours of television per day. And within that number, 8-10 year olds watch 2.26 hours of television per day. That is an enormous amount of time for your child to be influenced by the media.

As a parent, you empower yourself daily in order to be the best mom/dad that you can be to your child. It is with the same energy that you should encourage your child to be the best ‘me’ that they can be even when you are not next to them. You should not leave empowerment and self love lessons to cartoons and tween shows. They may impress values that may be totally different from yours and you may not be able to undo the wrongs of the matrix.

Teach your children the following:

Self Love

Say your name with authority. At this stage of your life, your name is all that you have going for you. You may be great at basketball, but you will be ‘Marcus’, who is great at basketball.

“The color of my skin is beautiful.” We are all different shades but you were wonderfully made for a specific reason.

“I love the texture of my hair.” Kinky, straight, stringy, short or long. Love your hair and always make sure that you comb it because it’s the crown that you wear every day.

“I love the way my teeth are shaped.” Love your features; love how your face looks, the size of your nose. Love it all. They’re yours.

“I love the way mommy and daddy smile at me.” Mom and dad are your biggest cheerleaders so know that they will cheer for you when you win or lose.

“Mommy and Daddy tell me that they love me just as I am.” They said that I am one of a kind and that means that there is no one else like me.

Teaching your child ‘Self Love’ at an early age will help you during the teen years when peer pressure, media and society become influential. A child with a strong foundation will be ready to lead the world.

I have been a fan of Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf for as long as I can remember. I danced the role of Sechita as a freshman at Syracuse (shout out to Jacqui Welch) and commissioned my sorority sisters from Brooklyn to bring their production to Westchester County several years ago (shout out to the grand diva director Tomasina Boone in the Down Under).

I also LOVE Nina Simone. Three Women paints such a vivid portrait of the complexity of our collective stories. Goose bumps run up my arm every time she belts out MY NAME IS PEACHES!!!!! (Thanks Avis for sharing the gift with me.)

The combination of these two pieces of art is .....POWERFUL! The trials, struggles, heartache, rejection and fear .....strength, beauty, resilience, tenacity and passion illustrate the depth of our pain, our aptitude to love and faith to move forward regardless of past hurts..

Needless to say, I am THRILLED about Tyler Perry's production (it better be good!) coming to theaters November 5th and I'm pleased to share the trailer with you!

Celebrate Family Tour Coming to NYC 9/21/10

Over a decade ago, my pastor led me to adopt a habit that I watched my grandmother practice during my childhood; I began listening to Christian radio. I would wake up to catch AR Bernard's program at 6:25am on WMCA AM 570 for a little snippet of a Sunday sermon and some much needed early morning inspiration.  As it happens when you tune in, by default I began to listen to the programming that followed: Georgia preacher Charles Stanley at 7am and Dr. James Dobson's Colorado Springs based Focus on the Family at 7:30am which in many ways inspired the birth of Chocolate Chip.

Solidified by an incredible infrastructure and tremendous depth of programming, Focus on the Family is a massive organization with significant political influence. They galvanize the right to raise their voices against public policy that are not aligned with their values.  I learned ALOT. Although I was often blessed by the practical yet powerful testimonies, it was necessary to filter through the ultra conservative views to gain the nuggets and insights on the practical and spiritual development of our families.

Well Focus on the Family is coming to NYC with their Celebrate Family tour on Tuesday September 21, 2010 at the Hammerstein Ballroom at 7pm. Admission is free.

Over time I stopped listening because of the demands of busy morning, but recently began tuning in by clicking in to the live feed online.  I must admit, I was led to the Celebrate Family tour announcement by an online ad featuring a lovely African American family strategically placed during Pastor Bernard's show (the incredible power of marketing). The fact is we'll probably be in very small number, but if my experience over the past 10 years is evidence, attending will be well worth it.  Check it out.

With all that we manage, it can be a challenge to find the time to take care of ourselves, but we MUST! There will always be demands on our schedules...deadlines looming, children to drop off at activities, meals to cook...or not, households to manage, meetings to attend and work to be done. But we must put numero uno on the top of our TO DO LISTS.

How to Make the Most of 11th Grade

Making the Most of 11th Grade:

Tips for Helping Students Reduce the Pressure of Senior Year by Planning ahead in Junior Year

As summer comes to a close for students around the country, this is a perfect opportunity to begin thinking about and (planning for) the “tipping point” of high school- junior year. Traditionally, students and their families waited until 12th grade to go into full planning mode around the college process. Today, more and more families are beginning to realize that the12th grade is too fast paced and high pressured to spend much time thinking. Senior year is the time for action. Junior year is the time for thinking.

Take advantage of the following tips so that the 11th grade can be the period of preparation before the launch. The time you spend planning as a junior can ensure that you will sail smoothly through senior year.

1. Get serious about your studies
As a Director of Admission, most of my colleagues will tell you that we like to see more A’s and B’s on the transcript than C’s and D’s. Take as many challenging classes as you’d like but be sure of your ability to do well in them. Register for a rigorous academic schedule and do your very best to score as many good grades as possible. If you can handle it, consider signing up for advanced classes. Admission officers don’t expect you to take more than 1 or 2 as a high school junior.

2. Take the SAT or ACT at least once for practice but do not have the scores sent to any colleges.
This process will allow you to take the test under regular test conditions without the pressure of having someone see the scores. Use your scores as the basis for improvement while you study or hire a tutor to for test prep.

3. Commit to a sport (or instrument) if you haven’t already.
Generally, admission officers aren’t impressed by the students who are a “Jacks of all trades, masters of none.” If you run track fairly well but you’re great at volleyball, drop track and focus on becoming excellent at volleyball.

4. Commit to regular community service or an extracurricular activity or get a job.
Do something with your lives besides studying. Admission officers want to admit interesting and well rounded students.

5. Begin thinking about the kind of college you'd like to attend and add yourself to mailing lists.
Take this time to consider the following:

• Location: do you want to live at home or could you live an hour or two away? Can you go across the country, and if so, can you afford to get home quickly when you're homesick?

• Size: do like small classes or are you just fine in large lecture halls?

• Style of the college: do you need to have close personal relationships with your professors or would you prefer to blend in among your other classmates? Do you want to pledge a fraternity or sorority? Do you play sports? Are you interested in an HBCU?

Consider your school types carefully as there are major differences between large state institutions, ivy league schools and small liberal arts institutions.

And finally, here are a few tips for parents so that the whole family can make the most of this year:

1. Initiate conversations about the process of choosing college but don't force it.
Let your child guide the discussion. Every child is at varying stage of readiness in the 11th grade. Inaction or procrastination in 11th grade isn’t a huge deal but juniors shouldn’t waste the year being so disengaged that they end up under pressure (with nothing accomplished) in 12th grade. Severe procrastination about the college planning process could be a sign of fear and anxiety about moving on.

2. Don't connect every mistake they make to their chances of getting into college
Kids make mistakes. Sometimes, kids make really stupid mistakes. In the admissions field, we’ve seen them all. Don’t panic. Colleges consider grades, courses, and activities over the four year period of high school but we focus most on 11th and 12 grade. If you child gets a C or D or experiences disciplinary action in school, sit down with them, understand the issue, and rectify it- quickly. Also, be prepared to explain it during the college admission process.

If your child is consistently late for school or received detention in the 9th grade, don’t sweat it. We'll never know.

3. Stop waking them up in the morning, doing their laundry, and making their beds immediately.
No one at the college will do it for them.

The best way to prepare your children for this new phase of life is to help them become self-sufficient. Support them as they make their own phone calls, secure their own applications, and write their own essays. Helping them is fine. Hovering over them makes you a “helicopter parent” and this is our greatest pet peeve as admission officers.

4. Finally, lead by example. Don't allow this process (or your child) to make you crazy.
Your child will be fine wherever they attend college.

President Barack Obama may have attended Harvard and Columbia but successful people attend all kinds of colleges. General Colin Powell attended City College, Oprah Winfrey attended Tennessee State University, and Drs. Bill and Camille Cosby earned their doctorates from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Remain open to the possibilities. Don’t use junior year to program your child into loving the school that you love.

With your guidance and support, they will achieve every goal they set their minds to. In the meantime, let’s make junior year as pain-free and enjoyable as possible.

When teaching assistants were eliminated from the kindergarten classrooms, my mother, a retired educator, volunteered her time. A dad concerned by the lack of physical education at my son's school organized a brand new program for the children in partnership with the tennis club where he serves as director.

Work That! Great News for Working Moms

Working moms: Raise your hand if you felt guilty when you returned to work after having your baby?

I remember those days so vividly. I stayed home for 3 months with my daughter and 6 months with my son. I was fortunate that my mom took care of them during the day so I could go to work with my mind at ease knowing my baby was being loved and cared for. I used to joke: Have pump will travel, because that black Medela backpack was almost like an appendage:)

I tried not to feel guilty. I found comfort in knowing that the income I received allowed us to provide a lifestyle for our family that would serve my children well for a lifetime. I did my best to keep the big picture in perspective.

I remember a colleague being so overwhelmed with guilt from leaving her little one at home while she commuted into the city to work everyday. My heart ached for her. How could such a noble thing like industry feel like the ultimate betrayal?

The new study, "First-Year Maternal Employment and Child Development in the First 7 Years" may bring hope and much needed stress relief to working moms! The results indicate that the positives (higher income, greater "maternal sensitivity" or responsiveness toward their children) related to moms working out of the home full-time outweigh the negatives (somewhat lower cognitive test scores) which is positive news for both mom and baby.

Earth Day 2010

Last year I attended a Leadership Seminar in Anchorage, Alaska and it changed the way I saw our planet FOREVER! Built around the theme of sustainability, the conference featured keynote speaker and environmental expert, Jerome Ringo of the Apollo Alliance http://apolloalliance.org/. With permission from Michael Jackson's estate, he opened with the video Earth Song and I saw it that day amidst the snow capped mountains with new eyes.

I returned home energized and committed to doing a better job of using our natural resources wisely. I turned the water off while brushing my teeth, began washing my clothes in cold water instead of warm, recycled the plastic bags from the supermarket and switched to recyclable ones. Most importantly I've spread the word to others. From guiding my children to develop an Earth conscious lifestyle (even our 3 year old son takes the plastic bottles out to the recylce bin) to conducting workshops about going green in order to save our home, the Earth.

So why should we go green?

“The world has a fixed amount of natural resources - some of which are already depleted. So as population growth greatly strains our finite resources, there are fewer resources available. If we intend to leave our children and grandchildren with the same standard of living we have enjoyed, we must preserve the foundation of that standard of living… what about saving clean air, water, fuel sources and soil for future generations?”

So what will you do with your children today for the 40th celebration of Earth Day?

Chocolate Chip, your family resource, has some ideas. Our 6 year old will start the day out planting trees at her elementary school. Her Daisy Girl Scout troop will spend the evening planting daisies at our local library.

According to www.autismspeaks.org, the nations largest autism science and advocacy organization, Autism, a complex developmental brain disorder, affects 1 in 110 children and 1 in 70 boys and the numbers are growing. You may be aware that Holly Robinson and Rodney Peete's son RJ was diagnosed with Autism shortly after his 2nd birthday. Since then they have become advocates for educating families about living with Autism. The Peetes recall the exhaustive list of things that doctors said that RJ would NEVER be able to do, like say "I Love You" on his own. But look at him now!!!! He and so many others are defying the prognosis because of early diagnosis and their parents valiant efforts to understand Autism so they could live happy, productive lives. Never say Never!!!

The Peetes introduce two new books: Not My Boy? by Rodney Peete and My Brother Charlie by Holly Robinson-Peete and RJ's twin sister, Ryan. I applaud them for being at the forefront of this movement and sharing their story with us.

First Lady Michelle Obama's call to action last week to stop childhood obesity inspired me to dust off a project I had been working on for 2 years. I've been on a mission to find healthy lunch options not only for my children, but all the families at my son's school. In 2008 I started packing lunches because it was the only alternative to the greasy spoon the school ordered from with a menu consisting of chicken nuggets, mac n cheese and the like on a daily basis.

While commiserating with another mom during a play date, she put me on to this great brand that I couldn't help but share with our Chocolate Chip family.

Can First Lady Michelle reduce childhood obesity in 1 generation? Well that's her plan as the President signs a memorandum on childhood obesity in the Oval Office today launching the Let's Move campaign.

Limiting television to tackle the development of sedentary lifestyles, smaller portion size, infusing fruits, vegetables and water into their daily diet and exercise are suggestions to help battle this nationwide epidemic. We personally saw a significant change in our daughter's body when we added gymnastics and tennis to her extracurricular activities which already included swimming and dance classes. The greatest benefit- she LOVES being physically active. You can always find her doing roundoffs and dancing around the house. The long term health benefits are numerous.

Data shows that 1 in 3 children are either over weight or obese. The number of overweight children ages 6 to 19 has tripled since 1970, according to a 2007 New England Journal of Medicine study. "We've seen the surge in obesity in this country is nothing short of a public health crisis, and it's threatening our children, it's threatening our families, and more importantly it's threatening the future of this nation," said First Lady Obama. "Higher rates of obesity are directly linked, as you've heard, to higher rates of chronic illnesses like heart disease and cancer and diabetes", she added.

Check out your neighborhood department of recreation for affordable programs to increase your child's level of physical activity. You never know what you might find from basketball and baseball clinics to ice skating lessons. Let your tax dollars work toward improving your family's health.

Chocolate Chip Recommends: The Princess and the Frog

“I love Princess Tiana, she’s brown like me” says 5 year old Brooke Bellamy just as the opening scene gets underway introducing the world to the long anticipated first Disney African American princess. Goosebumps spread over my body upon the first viewing of her chocolate face on screen.

As I sit back and begin to watch the movie through my Chuck D lenses, I do run into a few cultural landmines that give me pause. Why does the African American princess have to be poor? Oh wait, I forgot about Cinderella’s pedigree. Did the first Black Princess have to be a frog for over 50% of the movie? I get the modern twist on The Frog Prince and how it ties into the transformative nature of the story, but seriously? I overheard a non-African American mother say to her child, “we thought we were coming to see a movie about a princess but instead we saw a movie about frogs”

Why did Princess Naveen have to be from an exotic location like Maldonia? What’s wrong with the prince being a brother from Brooklyn? Even though it’s the county of Kings, I guess that wouldn’t work since we don’t have monarchies here.

Why is Ray, the lightening bug toothless with a dialect and a mumble worse than Mushmouth from the Cosby kids? My heart truly sank into the pit of my stomach when he opened his mouth for the first time. Conversely, my husband had a totally different response. Ray’s warmth reminded him of a family patriarch. His judgement was overwhelming favorable and represents the varying perspectives that can exist when people of different backgrounds and experiences view something but see totally different things. Ray is a transformative almost Christ-like figure who brings wisdom and enlightenment. We fall in love with him because of his tenderness. His beauty shines thru despite his frailties. Perhaps that’s the point? If he had teeth would I feel better? Would it impact the overall outcome? Is there some hidden lesson on not judging from outward appearances?

Is Disney insensitive? Are they conjuring up negative stereotypes? Well we know Disney’s history is spotty at best when it comes to cultural sensitivity (there was a white Pocahontas at the Disney Princess experience following the screening for goodness snake). Even though it took upteen years for Disney to figure out that a Black princess was a good business idea, they have invested time and capital into this project and the only outcome they want is SUCCESS. Is my vision blurry? Am I being overly sensitive? Are people going to laugh at or judge us negatively as a result of this film? I understand the concerns and they are valid, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I don’t think that is the case here (if this were Rupert Murdock and Fox we’d be having an ENTIRELY different discussion). I don’t give anyone a pass for insensitivity or conjuring up old stereotypes, but maybe just maybe we’re (myself included) taking things a bit too seriously.

While my daughter and the children in the theatre thoroughly enjoyed themselves it can leave African American parents with unanswered questions. Having said that, after tucking those thoughts into the back of my mind and turning down the volume on the “Fight the Power” track playing in my head, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and highly recommend it! Tiana is sassy and smart while exhibiting great discipline, focus and drive. What better role model could we ask for our little girls? Jazz and the spirit of New Orleans (pre-hurricane Katrina), both play supporting roles in the film making for a wonderful musical experience. It’s an entertaining story with enduring themes of love, family, legacy, diligence, transformation and the fulfillment of dreams despite the obstacles- positive, timeless values that cut across culture or socioeconomic status.

Most importantly, Brooke gives it a thumbs up because even at her young age, she understands the validation that comes with having a princess all her own and seeing herself on screen. The entire theatre brimmed with excitement and embraced OUR new princess! I saw girls of all cultures and ethnicity proudly wearing their Princess Tiana costumes to the screening and patiently waiting in long ques to be photographed with the newest princess during the Disney experience.

I hope The Princess and the Frog becomes a Disney classic and stands the test of time (like Cinderella and Snow White- the princesses of my generation). I want my daughter’s daughter to know Princess Tiana and the future princesses of color that will follow as a result of her success. Because when it’s all said and done, every little girl wants to be a princess. After all, isn’t that what the magic of Disney is all about?

In September 2009, just a few days before her 41st birthday Jennifer Jones Austin, mother of 2 ages 7 and 12, was unexpectedly stricken with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Doctors have said that, unless Jennifer undergoes a bone marrow transplant within the next few months, her chances of surviving this disease are slim.

During this season of giving, give the gift of LIFE. You can help Jennifer by becoming a registered donor with the Be The Match and getting tested to determine if your bone marrow is compatible. Even if you are not a match for Jennifer you may be able to help another person in need of a life saving transplant.

The test to determine compatibility is as SIMPLE as a Q-tip swab inside the cheek. The donation process is as SIMPLE as giving blood. A surgical procedure is NOT required.

Unfortunately, because African Americans and Hispanics are dramatically underrepresented in the National Bone Marrow Registries, African Americans have less than a 45% chance of finding a match in the current pool of donors. What exactly is a Blue Ribbon School? Well we're glad you asked:) Your friends at Chocolate Chip have done the research for you.

"The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a United States government program created to honor schools. The Blue Ribbon award is considered the highest honor an American school can achieve"

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors K-12 public and private schools that are either academically superior in their state or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement ... "these schools serve as models for other schools throughout the nation."

Blue Ribbon Schools "meet either of two assessment criteria...at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments."

Sounds great doesn't it, well the program is criticised because the criteria doesn't "take into account the socioeconomic status of the students and that studies show that students who come from homes with higher income and better educated parents do better than students without these advantages by virtue of their backgrounds. Thus, the award is usually given to schools with students from wealthy backgrounds."

So many of us agonize over the educational decisions we must make for our children. Personally, we struggled for a year to decide where to send our daughter to school after 3 very successful years at a Montessori based school.

At the same time, President Obama is proposing extending the school year and the school day to help American students excel and be more competitive on the global playing field.

As parents, we debate public vs. independent vs. parochial. We jump through hoops and endure high pressured and competitive admissions processes to get our kids into the schools of our choice.

After finding what we thought was the mecca of day schools last year, we began to fear the socio-economic and cultural impact that decision would ultimately have on our child. Yes, she could be in a superior educational institution with all the resources you could imagine, but would we also run the risk of her ending up in therapy by the age of 7 from the intense pressure to fit in?

Are the country's best schools really the BEST schools for our children? And at what cost?

So what's a parent to do?

In Rememberance....9/11/01

Today, I weep thinking of all of the families that were forever changed 8 years ago by acts of terrorism. I think of all the children who lost mommies and daddies, wives who became widows, husbands who became widowers, parents who had to bury their children and all the friends and family members left behind to grieve.

I remember as if it were yesterday, attending the remembrance service at Christian Cultural Center and witnessing an 8 month pregnant 9/11 widow as she spoke of the husband she lost. My heart ached as I thought of the unborn child that would never get a chance to meet her father.

Today, I think of a 10 year old girl who lost her mother, my classmate, on that dreadful day at the precious young age of 2. I can't help but think of my own children and what it must be like growing up without mommy. I pray a special prayer for the children of 9/11.

Simultaneously I celebrate those who survived and lived to build families of their own.

Wishing all of us God's peace and comfort as we remember...

Happily Ever After: A Positive Image of Black Marriage

Hi Chocolate Chip Fans!

I couldn't think of a more appropriate post to publish from my vacation in Oak Bluffs, a haven for Black families for generations, than this on Black marriage.

According to the US Census, in the early 196o's 81% of African-American children lived in two parent holds. Today those figures have almost been completely reversed 69.7% of African-American children are born out of wedlock! The data is staggering and should put you into a rage! Clearly those of us who love Black families have an uphill battle to fight to preserve our unions. The title of one of Dr. King's book captures it best, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?"

The Answer: Community

If you live in the Washington DC area, you are probably familiar with the blog Black and Married with Kids. Founded by Ronnie and Lamar Tyler, this power couple shares Chocolate Chip's passion for celebrating and changing the perceptions of Black families. http://blackandmarriedwithkids.com/

CNN's Black in America 2...Strong Marriage = Strong Family?

CNN's Black in America 2 premieres 7/22 & 7/23. Although I was extremely disappointed in the 2008 series for various reasons, I am hopeful that this year's reported emphasis on solutions will inspire and depict a community actively engaged in it's transformation despite societal challenges.

A part of the lead up to the event is a discussion on Black Marriage. Wedded Bliss Foundation and it's founder/executive director Nisa Muhammad are featured in the documentary and on CNN today. Created to help married couples through crisis, the organization offers Basic Training for Couples which "cover the value of commitment, responsibility to the black community, psychological differences between the sexes, sexual intimacy and conflict resolution."

MJ & Russell Simmons on Fatherhood

I don't know about you, but it's been a crazy 2 weeks since the passing of Michael Jackson. So much is being said, some good, some not so good. Until his daughter Paris broke her public silence at the memorial celebration when she eloquently expressed her love and devotion for her daddy, very little has been said about Michael Jackson the father.

The Ebony team has been very outspoken about their experience with MJ and his son Blanket during a 2007 interview. Harriette Cole and others have described him as a loving, doting and devoted dad and commented on the strong bond between father and son. One can only hope that the children will be comforted, nurtured and protected so they can have the full childhood their father never had but so desired for them. Rest in Peace Michael Jackson.

Russell Simmons graces this week's cover of Jet Magazine with his daughters Ming Lee and Aoki Lee. The article entitled "A Father's Lesson for His Daughters" illustrates Mr. Simmons' commitment to his "little girls" as he balances life after divorce. Though brief, the article nicely depicts his devotion for his daughters as he nurtures and cares for them while playing an active role in their lives.
